Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide the descriptive outcome of first admission schizophrenic patients. 72 subjects of first admitted patients with schizophrenia(N=57) and psychotic disorders other than schizophrenia(N=16) were studied retrospectively two or five years after their discharge. Strauss-Carpenter scale was used to measure outcome of their illness. Results were as follows.
1) In comparison to other psychotic disorder group(N=16), schizophrenia group(N=57) showed significant decrease in all outcome variables except duration of hospitalization and psychopathology.
2) Among first admitted schizophrenics, 40.7% of them were rehospitalized in the first 2 years and 73.3% of them in the first 5 years following hospital discharge. But percentage of patients hospitalized more than 3 month in the previous year were only 7% among the schizophrenia group.
3) Full-time employment rates of schizophrenia group were 40.7% in the 2 year follow-up group(N=27) and 46.7% in the 5 year follow-up group(N=30).
4) No significant difference was found between the 2 year and the 5 year group in psychopathology, duration of hospitalization, social contacts and employment. This suggests that functional deficits in schizophrenia occurred in the early phase of disease and maintained for a while.
Poor employment outcome, poor social contact outcome and high rehospitalization rate characterized the living conditions of the first admitted schizophrenic patients at 2 and 5 year follow up. Early psychosocial rehabilitation is believed to be crucial for the treatment of schizophrenic patients.
